Work Experience

R&D Engineer
Aug 2021 - Dec 2021
My Co-op experience with BVI Medical was filled with opportunities to understand the responsibilities of an R&D Engineer. I was able to build and evaluate product prototypes and write testing methods for knives, blades, and other company products. I also worked on specification development for products and analyzed the data using Minitab.
Throughout my time at BVI, I was fortunate enough to work with the New Product Development Team. I was able to design, procure, and fabricate tooling and fixtures used for Instron Testing through CAD modeling and 3D Printing. I also created/invented new concepts and design approaches for new ophthalmic medical devices. For the building of new products I would edit product drawings and build protocols used for manufacturing medical devices.
This Co-op allowed me to develop my skills in CAD Modeling, 3D Printing, Test Method Development, and Creative Thinking.

Sustaining Engineer
My co-op experience with Cook Medical was a great introduction to the Medical Device Industry. I was able to work on the documentation side of products and was able to implement technical writing skills, drawing and spec updates, and experimental design for products that need clearances for FDA Approval. I also executed proposed design, process, and labeling changes to align products with 510(k) Clearances.
I was fortunate enough to get a hands on experience as well by going into the lab to test various products through Ultimate Tensile Strength Testing, Austenitic Finish Testing, and Upper Plateau Testing to improve product build efficiency. A portion of my Co-op was accredited to analyzing the production of medical devices and detecting foreign matter in packaging.
This Co-op allowed me to develop my skills in Technical Writing, Lab Testing, FDA Approval Process, and Product Build Efficiency.

5G Innovator
Due to COVID-19, I wasn't able to experience my first Co-op in a proper environment. However, luckily enough, the University of Cincinnati provided me with an opportunity to work with other like minded individuals to be apart of the Fifth Third Team to help out with operations.
I was fortunate enough to work in a trans-disciplinary team to research and ideate ways to leverage 5G and edge computing technology for commercial banking.
This Co-op allowed me to understand the technological world and how the technology impacts the future in banking.

What I Learned
My internships gave me the proper experience and insights into what exactly the medical device industry looks like. From understanding the beginning of a product, to seeing the rigorous review process before launch, it was exciting to see the behind the scenes of products on the market.
Being integrated into a team environment allowed me to understand the value of compromise and acceptance as giving and receiving feedback are very important in pushing as company forward. The technical skills that I developed throughout my experiences have given me the confidence to implement myself in projects and discussions to not only help the company in a positive way but also help others see things in a different light. The skills that I developed the most were teamwork, CAD, technical writing, Minitab, 3D Printing, and Test Method Development.
